Saint Antonin
The old town of Saint Antonin Noble Val is just over an hour from Toulouse and Rodez airports. The towns of Albi, Montauban and
Cahors are all worth a day-trip, as are the Gorges of the Aveyron.
St Antonin lies on the right bank of the River Aveyron, opposite a high cliff known as the Roc d’Anglars. An abbey was founded in the town in the eighth century.
Present-day St Antonin is a labyrinth of narrow streets, lined by superb, well-preserved pantiled houses of the 13th to 15th centuries. Most remarkable is the 12th-century former town hall – the oldest civic building in France. Opposite, is the 14th-century covered market, which is still the focus of the town’s popular Sunday market.
St Antonin has a number of bars and restaurants and small shops. There are plenty of places to hire a canoe and many signed walks that will enable you to explore the countryside around. In the summer there are regular concerts and other events. |
